Melbourne’s Hidden Lane ways 

There are so many great places in Melbourne that they can even be a surprise to the locals. The best places in Melbourne aren’t the most popular but are tucked away in the laneways, away from the main hot spots of the CBD.

I am a Melbourne based photographer looking to promote and raise awareness of the wide range of cultural, entertainment and dining gems tucked away into laneways. The best way to promote Melbourne is to inform people that not all the best places to go out are not the ones right in front of you. Since Melbourne has a large dynamic of culture and food, travellers should get to experience this to the full extent. Some of the best places to go are only known of because of “word of mouth” rather than what’s paid to be advertised.

I would capture the laneways in such a way to show the best of what they can offer, packed with happy customers eating gourmet food. I would accentuate the laneways by using a wide angle lens on a sunny afternoon creating warm light, using a fill flash to break up the harsh shadows caused by the surrounding buildings.

This story would be well suited to the Qantas inflight magazine because most people travel to experience the culture, entertainment and foods that Melbourne has to offer. This story would inform the travellers with the insight that only the local would know giving them a better experience within the city of Melbourne.

What are the essential skills for success as an event photographer?

To be a successful event photographer you must:

  • Be organised
  • Be confident
  • Have great communication and people skills
  • Be flexible

What are some essential questions you will need to ask the client before the event?

  • Location
  • Time
  • Date
  • How many images
  • Are the images being published
  • Who are of importance at the event
  • Where I can shoot/cannot shoot

What are some of the technical considerations of shooting in a large, crowded and often dark space?

  •  Can a flash be used
  • White balance
  • Flash for exposure
  • Wide angle lens to fit in a lot of information without taking up too much space

One business model for event photographers is to not charge a fee to the event organisers to shoot, but rather sell images directly to the guests who attend the event (sometimes with a percentage of the sales going back to the organisers). What are some of the advantages to this approach?

It can become quite profitable and great ways to promote your business because people who buy the images may even buy multiple copies resulting in more profit. Selling images directly to the guests is a great way to get exposure because of the face-to-face value and they can show your images to potential future clients.

What are the disadvantages?

  •  You may not sell enough images on the night to cover the cost of the shoot
  • People may not like the images that have been taken resulting in no sale

Consider your workflow that would allow you to sell images directly to guests.

Upon taking the images I would hand out a business card with a website requiring a password to access, the client then can pick and choose the images they want to purchase.

Fast turn around is often the major prerequisite for clients when commissioning an event photographer. What are two reasons a client might request images before or immediately after the event has finished?

The images could be used as promotional material for the venue or the images could be published for news media.

Consider the workflow you would need to implement to enable you to deliver final images prior to, or immediately after the conclusion of the event?

I would get all the technical aspects of the images right in camera to minimize postproduction. Bring a laptop and have an assistant edit and output the images as I’m shooting, swapping memory cards through the night to maximize workflow.

When shooting for the social pages – as well as for many other events – it is essential that the photographer records the names – and correct spellings – of everyone they photograph. Consider a strategy to ensure all this information is efficiently and accurately recorded for every image.

For a large event I would hire an assistant to record the names of everyone in clear handwriting or on an iPad, then create a workflow template to apply the names to correct images.

Without yours or your client’s knowledge another photographer has also been booked by another organisation taking part in the event. The other photographer is clearly unhappy you are there. What are the reasons you think they might be unhappy?

  • Having multiple photographers will create competition for the best images and most sales.
  • If you are both using flash or lighting there could be technical interference.
  • If one photographer takes a great shot and the other photographer sees they might copy the same techniques and create a similar image
  • Getting in each others way or taking to much time on a single shot.

Consider some strategies for dealing with this situation.

  • Introduce yourself
  • Create a friendly working relationship
  • Find out where/what they will be shooting and try not to interfere with each other’s work

Now you have considered some of the challenges of event photography, consider the minimum equipment requirements for success in this field.

  • Camera body and maybe backup depending on the size of the shoot
  • A range of lens with different focal lengths
  • Tripod or monopod if need be
  • Flash or lighting equipment and accessories such as soft boxes and light stands
  • Spare batteries
  • Spare memory cards

Part One:

Research the requirements of the magazine and consider how the commissioning publication uses images. Consider location, your visual approach and equipment requirements.

This magazine provides content that is informative and relevant to Melbourne. The environmental portrait showcases the excitement as well as the relaxed attitude towards studying at CATC.

We tried to capture this by placing the subject in a lounge with all of his work spread out creating a relaxed yet serious approach towards his studies.

Part Two:

Your subject is a very busy person and their time is very limited.  You have been allocated a maximum of 30 minutes to produce the two compelling images. Consider how to use the time most effectively, or if required, negotiate for more time.

After getting permission to shoot our subject we took a few experimental images to gauge the exposure from the natural light. We set out his tools he uses for interior design to create a pleasing image describing what he does for his studies.

We scouted the location before the subject arrived, looking for flattering natural light, space and where we could position him. Using natural light saves us time because we aren’t messing around with flashes etc.

What do you think the photographer wants us to feel about their subject?

I think that the photographer wants us to feel like we can relate to the image. Maybe the subject had just finished putting a part on, or fixing something in the engine, so he feels achieved and excited about what he’s done.

Who do you think is the audience for the portrait? Consider their age, education, social/cultural background and political views.

 The audience that the photographer wanted to attract would be motor enthusiasts of all ages, or more specifically, 4-wheel-drive enthusiasts.

What techniques has the photographer used to engage the viewer? Consider the editorial context, location, lighting, posing, framing etc.

I think that the photographer used a long depth of field, to get the whole garage in focus, so that the mess is clearly visible, allowing other motor enthusiasts to be able to relate to the image in the way that they all have to make do with the space that they have, and not letting a small amount of space to work in, affect what they do, and their passion in any way.

What do you think the photographer wants us to feel about their subject?

The photographer wants us to show the dedication the subject has to his music, his facial expression and the use of black and white represents him in a serious way.

Who do you think is the audience for the portrait? Consider their age, education, social/cultural background and political views.

The audience is the music community, especially the hip-hop/producing community.

What techniques has the photographer used to engage the viewer? Consider the editorial context, location, lighting, posing, framing etc.

The photographer has used flash to illuminate the subject as well as his producing equipment. The composition of the image shows him in his studio with all his producing equipment, giving the viewer an insight into the way he works. The way he is posed with the serious look on his face represents how passionate he is about his music.
